A new documentary exploring the iconic fashion house Mugler is set to offer a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into its creative world as it celebrates 50 years at the forefront of fashion and fragrance. Directed by Matthieu Menu and produced by Terminal 9, Inside the Dream: Mugler delves into key moments leading up to the brand’s 50th anniversary, providing an exclusive look at the making of the Spring/Summer 2024 runway show by Fashion Creative Director Casey Cadwallader.
Since its founding in 1974 by the visionary designer Manfred Thierry Mugler, the house has earned a reputation for bold, avant-garde designs and groundbreaking fragrances. Known for its long association with some of the most boundary-pushing performers in pop culture, such as Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Dua Lipa, Mugler has consistently challenged the conventions of fashion and fragrance with a distinctive mix of power, drama, and fantasy.
The documentary offers a rich 60-minute exploration of the Mugler universe, intertwining unseen archive footage with new behind-the-scenes material from some of its most iconic moments. Viewers will witness the creative process behind Cadwallader’s latest runway collection, alongside the making of the renowned Angel and Alien fragrance campaigns starring Hunter Schafer and Anok Yai. Mugler’s signature blend of fashion and entertainment comes alive as the film traces the heritage of its iconic designs, including Zendaya’s show-stopping appearance in the chrome robot look from the Fall/Winter 1995-1996 ‘Cirque d’hiver’ collection at the premiere of Dune 2.
Danièle Lahana-Aidenbaum, Global Brand President for Mugler Fashion & Fragrances, reflects on the film as a celebration of bold creativity: “Fifty years of Mugler is a testament to the power of bold creativity. Casey Cadwallader continues to honour Manfred Thierry Mugler’s transformative legacy while shaping the future of fashion and fragrance.”
The film will also feature contributions from renowned figures in the fashion world, including supermodels Pat Cleveland and Iman Bowie, as well as stylists and designers like Law Roach. With commentary from industry insiders like L’Oréal Luxe President Cyril Chapuy and Master Perfumer Olivier Cresp, Inside the Dream offers a deep dive into Mugler’s lasting impact on both fashion and fragrance.
Fans of the house and those curious about its role in shaping contemporary fashion will be able to catch the documentary exclusively on Canal+ in France from 25 September, with a wider release on streaming platforms, including Prime Video, set to follow.
