Northern Stage, the largest producing theatre in the North East, has announced the cast and creative team for its festive production of Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol. This reimagined version is set to open in Newcastle upon Tyne on November 30, 2024, and will run until January 4, 2025.
The story, adapted by Karen Louise Hebden and directed by Northern Stage’s artistic director, Natalie Ibu, promises to bring the timeless tale of Scrooge to life with a fresh perspective. Described as “meaner and greedier than ever,” this version will incorporate elements of circus, illusion, and spectacular ghosts, aiming to enchant audiences of all ages. The narrative begins on the iconic Northumberland Street, setting the stage for a Christmas experience that resonates with both locals and visitors.
Returning to the role of Scrooge is Michael Hodgson, known for his previous work in The Pitmen Painters, as well as productions at the National Theatre and Broadway. Hodgson’s performance is highly anticipated, and he will be joined by an exciting ensemble cast that includes Gigi Noel-King, who trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and made her West End debut in Harry Potter and The Cursed Child. Taku Mutero, an alumnus of Drama Studio London, is also part of the cast, bringing credits from Salisbury Playhouse and Her Majesty’s Theatre to the production.
Malik Ibheis, a versatile performer originally from Düsseldorf, Germany, will contribute his skills in mime and physical theatre, having appeared in works like The School for Good and Evil on Netflix and Worzel Gummidge on the BBC. His inclusion adds to the diverse talents showcased in this festive reimagining.
Natalie Ibu expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “This story is one that so many of us know and love, and I can’t wait to share it with young people and their grown-ups from across the North East.” She hopes the production will resonate with younger audiences experiencing Dickens’ tale for the first time, filling their hearts with festive cheer.
The theatre’s commitment to community engagement is evident through its Pay It Forward campaign, which aims to provide access to performances for over 2,000 young people who might otherwise miss out. Ibu highlighted the importance of creativity and joy, stating, “We are constantly overwhelmed by the generosity of our Northern Stage audiences in supporting our Pay It Forward campaign.”
Northern Stage is also focusing on sustainability in its productions. Following the release of the Theatre Green Book in 2020, the theatre is committed to reducing its carbon footprint. For A Christmas Carol, set and costume designer Debbie Duru has transformed costumes and set pieces from previous productions, repurposing vintage items to create an authentic Victorian festive look. Ibu noted that 75% of the set and costumes will have had a previous life, reinforcing the theatre’s dedication to environmental responsibility.
Tickets for A Christmas Carol are now on sale. For a limited time, a full-price adult ticket purchase for selected performances will grant a free child’s ticket. For more details and to book tickets, visit the Northern Stage website.
