The Winchester Dondero Cultural Center in Las Vegas delighted local audiences last weekend with its presentation of Dracula-La-La: A Musical With Bite, an award-winning production that promises an enchanting mix of laughter and chills. The show featured a talented ensemble cast, including the captivating Didi West, making for an unforgettable evening of musical performances.
Written by Jay Nagle and the late Dwayne Parks, Dracula-La-La is one of over 20 original musicals renowned for their creativity and charm. Nagle, who directed the production, succeeded in crafting a visually stunning experience enhanced by melodious harmonies and standout performances from both adult and child actors.
The storyline revolves around a group of Birdwatchers, reminiscent of Boy and Girl Scouts, led by the strict Sister Klotz and the timid Maria Camphophenek. When they become stranded at the eerie mansion of Count Drayno—formerly known as Dracula—their spooky adventure unfolds. Thirteen-year-old Beau Geurts shines as Johnnie, the spirited protagonist, while fellow young actors Paxton Wulf and Izayah Michael display their impressive skills, drawing from their experiences in previous local productions like Matilda.
The vibrant personalities of the cast inject life into the comedy, reinforcing the belief that “there are no small roles, only small actors.” Brianna Adams, playing Sister Klotz, and Amy-Beth Paladino as Hilda, both stage veterans, delivered energetic performances that kept audiences laughing. Greg Korin as Yorg, the werewolf butler, captivated viewers with his exceptional comedic timing, while Angela Pullman mesmerised as the Gypsy, showcasing her powerful stage presence and vocal talent. Lorenzo Gabaldon, as Baron Von Stalker, stole the show with his hilarious, over-the-top physical comedy.
At the centre of the production were Andrew Ribaudo as Count Drayno and Didi West as Maria Camphophenek. Ribaudo brought charm and charisma to the role of the debonair millionaire, skillfully seducing Maria as he schemes to make her immortal. Didi West, a renowned singer with accolades from both Las Vegas and Hollywood, delivered a powerful performance, effortlessly transitioning between the sweet, expressive Maria and her trance-like state. The palpable chemistry between Ribaudo and West was evident in their physical interactions and sultry harmonies, enhancing the comedic romance.
Under Nagle’s direction and co-produced by Patrick Powell of Tiny Giraffe Productions, the production showcased the incredible talent within the local community. The combination of comedic performances, eerie choreography by Dwan Miller, and stunning set design—including fog machines and silhouette lighting—immersed the audience in the mysterious atmosphere of Drayno’s castle.
Dracula-La-La: A Musical With Bite is a delightful blend of comedy and music, enchanting audiences of all ages and demonstrating the richness of local theatrical talent. The production not only entertains but also highlights the vibrant cultural scene thriving in the community, making it a must-see event for theatre enthusiasts.
