Casio Computer Co., Ltd. has unveiled the DW-5000R, a modern re-creation of the very first G-SHOCK watch released in 1983, the DW-5000C. With a design that remains faithful to the original model, this new addition to the G-SHOCK family marks the brand’s return to its roots, blending nostalgia with innovation.
When Casio introduced G-SHOCK in 1983, it revolutionised the world of wristwatches by creating a completely new category of shock-resistant timepieces. The original DW-5000C was the first of its kind, engineered to withstand extreme conditions, making it the go-to watch for people working in tough environments such as construction sites or engaging in intense sports. G-SHOCK’s launch marked the beginning of a new era in watchmaking, combining durability with style.
The DW-5000R celebrates the legacy of this pioneering product, offering an updated yet authentic tribute to the DW-5000C. Casio says the new release is the most faithful reproduction of the original model to date, surpassing previous limited-edition anniversary editions.
Every detail of the DW-5000R has been meticulously designed to replicate the look of the original, from the uneven texture around the band holes to the precise placement of the dimples. The top surface of the band features the original “PROTECTION” and “G-SHOCK” lettering, while the bezel mimics the flat design of the original. The face of the watch also carries the iconic red, blue, and yellow colour scheme, which became synonymous with the G-SHOCK brand.
Further enhancing its authenticity, the DW-5000R features a stainless-steel centre case and screw-lock case back, engraved with the phrase “Shock Resistant,” much like the original DW-5000C. Manufactured at Casio’s Yamagata factory in Japan—the birthplace of G-SHOCK—the watch is a tribute to the craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into the creation of the first model.
While the DW-5000R is a nostalgic homage to the original, it also incorporates modern features. The new model comes equipped with a high-brightness LED backlight, ensuring easy readability in low-light conditions. Additionally, the bezel and band are made from bio-based resin, a material intended to reduce environmental impact, aligning with Casio’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.
Casio’s decision to re-release the DW-5000C in the form of the DW-5000R is part of its strategy to honour the legacy of G-SHOCK while continuing to innovate and improve its products. The brand, which has consistently delivered rugged and reliable watches, aims to keep pushing the boundaries of design and technology in the wristwatch market.
The DW-5000R is available now, offering watch enthusiasts and collectors a chance to own a piece of history while enjoying the durability and modern features that make G-SHOCK a popular choice for those seeking a robust, functional timepiece.
