North Italy’s ASL CN1 Cuneo, a healthcare public service organisation serving 173 municipalities, has adopted Cubbit’s innovative geo-distributed S3 cloud storage solution, achieving significant cost savings and improved data resilience. The move sees the organisation reduce storage expenses by 50% while ensuring compliance with stringent GDPR, NIS2, and Italian public sector regulations.
ASL CN1 Cuneo manages 110 terabytes of backup data, 80% of which is classified as critical by Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency. The healthcare provider faced challenges with its previous reliance on hyperscaler cloud services, including escalating egress and API call fees. Meanwhile, on-premises solutions, while compliant, proved costly and resource-intensive to manage, a burden for a public entity operating on limited budgets.
Cubbit’s DS3 fully-managed object storage system provided a viable alternative, offering secure, compliant, and cost-effective data storage. The solution includes geo-distribution capabilities that ensure resilience against ransomware attacks and data disasters, enabling ASL CN1 Cuneo to meet national and European sovereign requirements while storing data within Italian borders.
Unlike traditional S3 solutions, Cubbit’s DS3 eliminates hidden fees associated with egress, API calls, and bucket replication. The fixed-cost model, paired with top-tier security standards, has enabled ASL CN1 Cuneo to redirect savings into delivering quality healthcare services.
“Finding a storage solution that met our strict compliance needs, elevated security to NIS2 standards, and reduced costs was no easy task,” said Andrea Saglietti, Head of Innovation and Information Security at ASL CN1 Cuneo. “Cubbit delivers sovereignty, resilience, and economic advantages. We’ve achieved 50% savings compared to previous configurations while gaining greater peace of mind over the security and compliance of our data.”
Cubbit’s deployment has been instrumental in enabling ASL CN1 Cuneo to adopt the 3-2-1-1-0 backup strategy via Veeam, enhancing protection against client and server-side ransomware. With compliance now seamlessly integrated into its storage solution, the organisation mitigates the risk of GDPR and NIS2 non-compliance fines, which can reach €10 million or 2% of global annual revenue.
Cubbit’s co-CEO and co-founder, Alessandro Cillario, highlighted the growing need for robust storage solutions in healthcare. “European healthcare organisations must navigate complex regulatory frameworks while addressing increasing data volumes and cybersecurity risks. Cubbit ensures that critical healthcare data is safeguarded, compliant, and cost-efficient—without the burden of hidden fees or maintaining on-prem infrastructure.”
The speed of deployment and ease of use of Cubbit’s DS3 has also been a game-changer for the organisation. By transitioning to a cloud-first approach, ASL CN1 Cuneo now has a scalable, future-proof system to manage its data needs without compromising on security or compliance.
This partnership marks a significant step forward for healthcare data management, offering a blueprint for other public sector organisations facing similar challenges.
