Xsolla Expands Payment Solutions to Boost Game Developer Reach in Southeast Asia
Global video game commerce company Xsolla has announced a significant expansion of its payment solutions in Cambodia and Indonesia, introducing eight new local payment options in Cambodia and twelve in Indonesia. This development aims to support game developers targeting the growing gaming markets across Southeast Asia (SEA) by making payment processes more accessible and convenient for users.
The move is part of Xsolla’s broader strategy to deepen its presence in SEA, where mobile and digital gaming are on the rise. Xsolla’s Chief Strategy Officer, Chris Hewish, underscored the company’s commitment to making payment solutions accessible to all players, stating, “Xsolla’s goal is to provide game developers with the necessary tools to reach and monetise audiences in dynamic gaming markets like Cambodia and Indonesia. By expanding our payment services, we help developers navigate payment challenges and connect with a broad audience.”
In Cambodia, the new payment methods reflect local preferences and include options such as Internet banking and popular digital wallets. These tailored solutions cover 90% of Cambodia’s payments market, allowing nearly all Cambodian gamers to use their preferred payment channels. Among the newly introduced options is Bakong KHQR, a QR-based payment system that holds 45% market share in Cambodia. Acleda Bank, another popular method, accounts for 15% of the payments market. Other options include digital wallets like Wing Money and Pi Pay, which cater to Cambodia’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. With digital payments in the country growing by nearly 29%, the expanded payment options are expected to help game developers reach Cambodia’s almost 2 million gamers more effectively.
In Indonesia, where over 185 million gamers make up the largest share of the SEA market, the new options aim to tackle the challenges of a largely unbanked population. With 80% of Indonesian consumers either unbanked or underbanked, alternative payment methods are essential. E-wallets, bank transfers, cards, and cash represent the most preferred transaction methods, covering 90% of the market. The newly added services in Indonesia include platforms like ShopeePay, Jenius, and Akulaku, allowing more seamless transactions and expanding the reach of game developers to Indonesia’s tech-savvy mobile users.
Indonesia’s gaming sector benefits from high smartphone penetration rates of around 80%, which Xsolla hopes to leverage with its payment solutions. E-wallets account for 39% of payment transactions, bank transfers for 27%, cards for 17%, and cash for 11%. By providing diverse payment options, Xsolla anticipates that game developers will see a boost in transaction success rates and an expanded user base.
Xsolla’s entry into these markets comes at a time when digital transformation is spurring the SEA gaming market’s growth. In Cambodia, the gaming market is projected to reach a value of $75.21 million by 2027, with mobile gaming already accounting for two-thirds of current revenue. Meanwhile, Indonesia, with its large population and rapid digital adoption, is emerging as one of the fastest-growing digital markets globally.
By tailoring its payment services to meet local demand, Xsolla aims to support developers in maximising their engagement and revenue opportunities within these growing markets, ultimately benefiting both game developers and consumers across SEA.
