Huawei is set to unveil its latest advancements in 5G voice technology at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona, with a particular focus on New Calling – an innovation designed to enhance the way users experience voice and video communications. As the telecoms industry shifts towards 5G-Advanced (5G-A) networks, the company is positioning itself at the forefront of voice service evolution, enabling mobile operators to deliver AI-powered, interactive experiences.
5G Voice Evolution Gains Momentum
Voice services remain integral to mobile networks, with over five billion users worldwide relying on Voice over LTE (VoLTE) for high-quality voice and video calls. Over the past year, the transition to 5G has accelerated, with major commercial rollouts and the gradual phasing out of older 2G and 3G networks.
Huawei’s New Calling technology is gaining traction, offering enhanced voice services that move beyond traditional communication. By incorporating AI and interactive features, the technology is expected to reshape the way users engage in calls. At MWC 2025, Huawei will showcase how New Calling can provide operators with a competitive edge in an increasingly AI-driven industry.
Huawei’s SVC4 Solutions for 5G Voice Networks
To support the development of next-generation voice services, Huawei has introduced its SVC4 series of solutions, designed to help operators transition smoothly to 5G voice networks.
- Single Voice Core (SVC): A bare-metal, container-based solution that fully integrates voice services across 2G to 5G networks.
- Single Voice Roaming (SVR): Ensures seamless VoLTE roaming as operators phase out older networks.
- Single Voice Insight (SVI): Enhances network quality through real-time analytics.
- Single Voice Bypass (SVB): Ensures reliable call connections, even in the event of peripheral network faults.
Additionally, Huawei has launched a new Session Border Controller (SBC) system, designed to provide local call switching, ensuring voice services remain operational even in challenging network conditions.
New Calling Expands Beyond China
China has been an early adopter of New Calling, with operators such as China Mobile rolling out services including Visualised Voice Calling, Fun Calling, and Real-Time Translation. By 2024, these services had attracted over 40 million users, demonstrating strong demand for enriched voice experiences.
Now, the technology is expanding beyond China, with operators in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific preparing to roll out New Calling commercially. By 2025, an increasing number of devices will support interactive calling via data channels, eliminating the need for additional apps and streamlining the user experience.
AI-Powered Future for Voice Services
Huawei is also preparing to launch an AI-powered intelligent calling agent, built on the New Calling platform. This innovation aims to transform the traditional dial pad into a gateway for AI-driven services, enabling more interactive and personalised communication experiences.
Collaboration across the telecoms industry will be key to the success of 5G-A voice services. Huawei plans to engage with global operators, equipment manufacturers, and industry bodies at MWC 2025 to drive further innovation in intelligent communications.
